Roof Flashing

Every transition on a roof is a place water wants to get in.

A roof rarely fails in the middle of a plane of shingles or panels. It fails at the transitions. Where a wall meets a roof, where two roof planes meet in a valley, where a chimney or vent pokes through. Flashing is what makes those transitions watertight.

We form the full family of roof flashing: step flashing that interleaves with shingle courses up a sidewall, valley flashing that carries water down where two roof planes meet, drip edge along eaves and rakes, and counter-flashing that laps over base flashing at chimneys and walls.

Every profile is cut to your roof pitch and detail. Send us the pitch and the run length and we'll brake it to fit, in a finish that matches your roofing.

Alberta roofs deal with heavy, wet spring snow loads and ice damming caused by attic heat loss melting snow that then refreezes at the eaves, and both put extra stress on the transitions that flashing protects. A drip edge or valley that's undersized or poorly lapped is exactly where ice damming forces water back up and under the roofing material, so we form these profiles with enough coverage and a positive lap direction to handle water moving somewhere other than straight downhill.

Mixing metals on a roof is a real durability issue that's easy to overlook. Galvanized steel flashing in direct, prolonged contact with copper or certain treated fasteners can set up galvanic corrosion that eats away at the steel faster than normal weathering would. If your roof has copper accents, dissimilar fasteners, or a mix of metal roofing and flashing types, it's worth telling us up front so we can recommend a compatible material rather than a combination that'll corrode early.

Roof flashing typically goes in alongside the roofer rather than before them, with step flashing woven into shingle courses as they're laid and valley or drip edge set under the underlayment at the eaves and rakes. We cut to the pitch and dimensions you send us so the flashing is ready to install on schedule instead of holding up the crew on installation day.

Chimney and skylight flashing tend to be the trickiest details on a roof because they combine several transitions at once: a vertical surface meeting a sloped one, often on more than one side, plus a counter-flashing piece that has to be let into the masonry or siding above. We form base flashing, cricket pieces and counter-flashing as separate parts that lap correctly with each other, since trying to force a single bent piece to do all of that work is usually where leaks start.

Questions

Roof Flashing FAQ

What pitch can you bend to? +

We brake to whatever angle your roof calls for. Give us the pitch (e.g. 4:12, 6:12) with your order and the flashing comes bent to match.

Open valley or closed valley? +

Both are available. Open valleys use a wider metal channel left exposed between shingle courses; closed valleys weave shingles over a narrower metal strip. Tell us which your roofer is detailing for.

What size is standard step flashing? +

Most residential step flashing runs 8" x 10" or 10" x 10" pieces, but we'll cut to whatever size your shingle exposure and wall detail need.

Can drip edge match my shingle colour? +

Yes, drip edge and other exposed flashing can be ordered prepainted to closely match common shingle tones.

How fast can you turn around a roofing job? +

Most roof flashing orders are ready within a few business days. Call with your pitch, profile and total footage for a firm date.

Can you cut flashing for standing-seam or corrugated metal roofing? +

Yes. We form matching transition and closure flashing for metal roof panels as well as shingle roofs, just send us the panel profile and pitch.

What should I know about ice damming? +

Flashing helps, but ice damming is mostly an attic ventilation and insulation issue. We can still make sure your valley and drip edge have enough coverage to handle backed-up water, but talk to your roofer about attic venting too.

Do you supply chimney and skylight flashing kits? +

We form the individual pieces, base flashing, cricket, and counter-flashing, to fit your specific chimney or skylight dimensions, rather than selling a generic one-size kit that has to be trimmed and forced to fit on site.

Can you supply flashing for a roof replacement, not just new construction? +

Yes, reroofing jobs are a large share of what we cut. Bring us the new pitch and profile details and we'll match flashing to the new roofing material, even if it's different from what was originally installed.
